Synopsis of The Welkening
The Misfits of Weyerhauser High know how to commiserate. If Lizbeth isn’t moaning about her fullback-body, her brother Bennu is fretting that no girl would ever fall for a guy with thick glasses and a beak-nose. And while Len rages about being short, his sister Angie complains that some jock called her an airhead. It’s no wonder the foursome hang out together. To make matters worse, the tatted-out McKenzie Boys take a special interest in making the Misfits miserable.
At least home is a refuge. The Misfits enjoy hearing Len and Angie’s mom, Charlotte, read to them from her book manuscript about Percival P. Perkins (named after Len and Angie’s household pet, the “ginger cat with the warm green eyes”).
The summer after Len and Bennu’s senior year, the Misfits are assailed from within and without. If their own bickering doesn’t do them in, the terrifying McKenzie Boys are ready to finish the task. Along the way, the Misfits suddenly find themselves in a strange, new place called Welken. They are surrounded by ten cloaked figures. The Misfits learn that a destructive force, a huge beast called Morphane, threatens Welken. They feel called to help the Welkeners, in part because the more they are “in Welken,” the more they are “of Welken.”
They must discover what brought Morphane into the land, what will take him out, and what role they are to play in resisting Morphane’s soul-swallowing wrath. These issues take them back to Skinner, Oregon, and lead them to return to Welken to embark on individual quests. When they come together again, all begins to converge in a cataclysmic event called The Welkening.
To say anything more would be to give too much away!
